Nuneaton<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Mountain and Hillwalking Club had a very enjoyable
\n<\/span><\/span>winter walk in the Peak District between Christmas and New Year to
\nblow <\/span><\/span>away the cobwebs of the festivities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

On a typical winters day the weather was fine, dry and very cold which <\/span><\/span>makes for good walking.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>With just a slight breeze the temperature felt <\/span><\/span>below freezing which was just fine.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>This walk started at Waterfall <\/span><\/span>which is a small village just north of Waterhouses on the A523.<\/span>\u00a0A<\/span><\/span>ttending were members of the club, Keith, Michele, Martyn and David who <\/span><\/span>were also joined by Sue and Phil from Burton for their first outing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The days before had been very wet and the fields could have been a <\/span><\/span>quagmire, however with the hard frost the ground was solid and made for <\/span><\/span>easier walking.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>We descended down a pretty limestone valley descending <\/span><\/span>down into Monsal Dale to head north.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Normally in summer this is a busy <\/span><\/span>trail winding its way through a beautiful river valley, but on this <\/span><\/span>occasion there was virtually no one around, probably put off by the <\/span><\/span>winter conditions, which was great for our group.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>After a few miles we <\/span><\/span>came off the track and headed to Butterton which is worth a quick visit <\/span><\/span>with its old houses and an interesting ford.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Sadly the pub in the <\/span><\/span>village was closed.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>We then made our way down another valley, over <\/span><\/span>fields and eventually back to the cars.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>A nice winter\u2019s walk, taking <\/span><\/span>about five hours and just over ten miles in length.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
